The Notetaker had a 8086 for running Smalltalk and a second one for I/O. The last memo (from 1980) mentions dropping the II in favor of developing a Notetaker III, but gives no details about what that would be like. The total cost of the prototypes was around $8700. In memo "19790604 Subsystem Analysis NoteTaker I" it is clear that the changes between the Notetaker I and II would be small and the goal was to get the cost of the case below $500, not the whole machine. I should have checked the old memos before writing the above comment. All the original documentation for the Notetaker is now available at Bitsavers and can be directly consulted. Answer (1 of 4): I have a little bit of a different view on the question, Why did Xerox PARC fail First, having been hired in 1973 by David Kerns and then working at Xerox until 2015, I was able to watch the entire transformation of PARC. Still, the design and programming affected the design of the portable computers in the years to follow. The NoteTaker is a portable computer of considerable power useful for a wide range of computational and simulation oriented functions. The unit did not actually make it to commercial production. Fairbairn December 1978 SSL-78-1xxx ABSTRACT This manual describes the NoteTaker computing system. The goal was to have a sale price of just $2000 and there were initial plans for a $500 Notetaker 2.
